PET TRANSPORT

Southwest Airlines

General Information - Pet Policy - Southwest Airlines allows small vaccinated domestic cats and dogs to travel with you in-cabin under the seat in front of you. All pets must be carried in an appropriate carrier, as indicated below. Southwest Airlines will not accept pet remains as carry on or checked baggage.

The pet fee is $95 per pet carrier each way. Customers traveling with a pet may not occupy an exit row or a seat with no forward under-seat stowage. Southwest Airlines will only carry pets in the cabin; pets are not permitted as checked baggage. There will be no more than six (6) scheduled pet carriers per scheduled flight. The weight limit for dogs flying in most airline cabins is 20 pounds. But there are some exceptions: Southwest Airlines, for example, doesn't have a weight limit, but, as with most airlines, a pet carrier has to stow beneath the seat in front of you.

Service and Emotional Support

It is important to keep in mind that Customers with disabilities seeking to travel with a trained service animal must still provide credible verbal assurance that the animal is a trained service animal, and Customers must still comply with all documentation requirements set forth by federal regulations when traveling with an ESA.

Trained service animals

  • Southwest will accept the following species of animals in our cabin as trained service animals—dogs, cats, and miniature horses.

  • Southwest will accept fully trained psychiatric service animals as trained service animals.

Emotional support animals (ESAs)

  • The ESA must be either a dog or a cat.

  • Each Customer may bring only one ESA on the flight.

  • The ESA must be in a carrier that can be stowed under the seat in front of the Customer or on a leash at all times while in the airport and onboard the aircraft.
